Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Pilates?
A: Great question…
Pilates is a form of movement introduced in the early 1900’s by a a very clever guy called Joseph Pilates. It was originally brought in for rehabilitation in world war 1 to help rehab injured soliders.
Fast forward to today … it has evolved. however, we still use the original pilates pieces (slightly more modernised) to help bring about functional movement, core strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness. Rehabilitation is still a huge component in some studios, like ours & this style is called “Clinical Pilates”.
Our Clinical 1:1 Pilates classes are more focused on the rehabilitation side of Pilates & using the pieces & movement to help with injuries, pain, imbalances & also the prevention of future injuries also.
PS. These movements aren’t just a fad by any means (altho Pilates has really taken off in more recent years in Sydney), Pilates has been around for over 100 years & we have been teaching for over 10 years.
True Pilates as we like to call it, is also so much about body awareness & education that you will take into your everyday life and into all the other activities that you love doing. We never want you to give up the sports & hobbies you love doing.. the right style of Pilates really is the answer to longevity!
Q: What types of classes does Semper Pilates offer?
A: We provide
Clinical 1:1 Classes
All Equipment Studio 4:1 Classes
Mat Pilates 6:1 Classes
Every 1:1 & Studio Class is carefully designed to ensure personalised attention. Everyone has their own specific movement program designed for them facilitated by Emily or Alison
Q: How are the classes tailored to individual needs?
A: Every class is designed based on each client’s goals & their body’s needs - we constantly adapt our clients program based on their daily needs also.
Eg 1. CLIENT A “Hey Al, I was gardening all yesterday & my back today is so sore…” We will now adjust Client A’s program to incorporate more mobility & stretching techniques especially around their hips, hamstrings & quads based on what the client has told us to improve /eliminate their acute back pain & also give them 2-3 things they can do for homework to help when away from the studio.
Q: Should I do a 1:1 Clinical PIlates Class first?
A: Definitely Yes. its not compulsory by any means, but it does give you the best start to our Pilates Classes. We teach you everything you need to know about our Pilates world & afterwards you will be so ready to take on your first class - you might actually be very excited about it too (like us)
Q: What should I expect coming into my first 1:1 session?
A: Firstly, expect to to not only just like our class, but rather love your first class. We can actually promise this (or your money back)
Your first class won’t be daunting or super hard - we can also promise that. It is an assessment session but think f it more like “you get to know us, we get to now you” kind of session, plus some gentle movement based on your current body health & the info you have given us.
We will learn all about you, and also you will learn all about our style of movement & how it will help you.
This first class then allows us to customise your future sessions appropriately for you.
Q: Are Pilates classes suitable for people with injuries or chronic conditions?
A: absolutely - Yes. There really isn’t anyone our classes aren’t suited too. (however, We are upstairs - so your only pre-requisite is being able to walk up/down stairs).
Pilates is so adaptable and focuses on functional movement to support rehabilitation and improve mobility. It’s also ideal to consult with your healthcare provider before starting too, we love to work with your Physio, Dr, Osteo, Chiro etc so always feel welcome to share our details with them or vice versa so we can get in touch and give you a more comprehensive/complimentary program.
Q: How many clients are in each class?
A: We limit our classes to a maximum of 4 clients in the Studio class & 6 clients in the Mat classes. This means everyone gets the attention they deserve, while enjoying the company of a small group with lots of laughs and banter amoungst the movement.
Q: What equipment is used in the classes?
A: We utilise a variety of Pilates equipment, including Reformers, Cadillac/Trapeze, chair, barrels, and other apparatus. These pieces help facilitate spinal movement in all directions, supporting your body through these movements allows you to move better/well “functional movement” - tailored to your needs.
Q: How often should I attend classes for best results?
A: For optimal benefits, we recommend attending classes 2-3 times per week, though this can be adjusted based on your personal goals and availability.
Q: What attire is recommended for Pilates classes?
A: We take our movment seriously but not our outfits.. So please just wear whatever you are comfortable moving in. We don’t mind if its you fancy active wear or your old tracky pants as long as you have your socks ready - you are good to go.
